Faith and Life
General FAQs

Answers

  1. Why is the Faith and Life series written at a grade level above the average reading level of the child?

The Faith and Life series is intentionally written at a grade level about the average reading level of the child in the primary grades. Children of this age deserve to learn more of the Good News of the Catholic Faith than just what they can read. A child's oral comprehension is far beyond his reading ability. For example, a six-year-old can follow the plot and dialogue of a TV program even though he would not be able to read the written script of the program. Applying this principle to catechetics, the Faith and Life series presents Christian doctrine in a style designed to arouse wonder and challenge the intellect of the child thus avoiding boredom.

Children love to be read to. As they listen to the narratives in the Faith and Life series, children will learn to associate God with the joy of story time rather than a lesson in reading. By lessening the emphasis on reading they are able to concentrate their attention on the Gospel message itself.

  6. Why does Faith and Life have questions and answers at the end of the chapters to be memorized?

Memorization and understanding are essential in handing on the faith to students. Pope John Paul in his encyclical, Catechesi Tradendae, stated that in catechesis, faith and piety do not grow without memorization.

Bishop John Meters of the Diocese of Peoria in his pastoral on Religious Education titled "To Reach Full Knowledge of the Truth" states that, " Memorization allows the child to have a permanent space in mind and heart set aside for and dedicated to the things of God and of the Church. They are permanently there wherever the child goes." Bishop Meyers mentioned that persons can go back to that which they have memorized again and again looking at and pondering them in different life settings to give solace and comfort in times of trouble, to question, or for a call to conversion.

Test scores from students with the Faith and Life series far exceed the 59% percent average score received by junior high students on doctrinal content exams. The Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist is taught in depth from the first grade to eighth grade. The students come to an understanding, appreciation and love for the Holy Eucharist. With this instruction the Faith and Life students will never be among the 65% who, according to polls, do not believe completely in the real Presence of Jesus Christ in the Holy Eucharist.
